This Paipo surfboard is fast and fun. With a deep single concave, nice sharp rails and a slightly parabolic tail this board will hold in the steepest of waves. Its nice wide nose also makes it good for drop knee riding. A Paipo surfboard is ideal for less advanced surfers, young groms and older surfers who still want to experience that wave riding magic without the pressure on their joints, knees, hips etc. These boards are so addictive because anyone can enjoy them in even the smallest of waves. Immerse yourself in the thrill of the ride whether young or old, male or female, advanced or beginner – it’s a win win all around!
Before bodyboards there was plywood. Paipo riding is a popular form of wave-riding most often associated with Hawaii. There is also evidence that the Japanese were riding their version of Paipos (Itakonori) from as early as the late 1800s and there is photographic evidence of people surfing prone on a timber board from around the 1950’s in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Materials – we use only Australian-grown Paulownia wood for our Alaias. Paulownia is an incredibly light hardwood with great water and rot-resistant qualities. All boards are handshaped and then sealed with liquid lanolin – straight from the sheep’s back! Lanolin acts as the best water resistant coating you can apply to a wood board as an alternative to glassing. It will keep your board water resistant for months and once it’s in the water it is actually sticky so you don’t need to cover your beautiful wood board with wax. Just unwrap it (recycle the packaging of course) and go surfing!
Leash plugs are installed upon request. Please allow 10 days + for delivery as all our boards are made to order.
The standard model is 48″ x 16.5″ x 3/5″ but can be modified to suit your needs, just send us an email.
We are also now stocking Paipo blanks made from Paulownia timber, so you can shape that Paipo that suits you best! To find out more, check them out in store.
